A hair transplant in Turkey typically costs $1,500 to $5,500 as an all-inclusive package, while Mexico usually costs $2,500 to $6,000, often for the surgery alone, at around $1.25 to $2.50 per graft. Turkey is usually cheaper per graft, more specialised in hair restoration and includes the hotel and transfers in the price. Mexico’s main advantage is distance, because it is a short drive or flight from the United States and Canada. For most patients who need a medium or large operation, Turkey gives more for the same budget.
I am Dr. Mehmet Erdoğan, co-founder of Smile Hair Clinic in Istanbul, president of SAÇREHDER and a member of FUE Europe and the World FUE Institute, with more than 5,000 hair transplant procedures behind me. Many of our North American patients considered Mexico before choosing Istanbul, and they usually ask the same questions. This page compares the two destinations on price, quality, regulation, travel, packages and follow-up, so you can decide which one fits your case.

| Hair transplant Turkey vs Mexico at a glance | Turkey | Mexico |
|---|---|---|
| Typical price | $1,500 to $5,500 | $2,500 to $6,000 |
| Cost per graft | About $1.15 on average | $1.25 to $2.50 |
| What the price covers | Surgery, hotel, transfers, medication, PRP, aftercare | Usually the surgery, extras vary by clinic |
| Pricing model | Mostly fixed packages | Mostly per graft |
| Main techniques | FUE, sapphire FUE, DHI, unshaven, Long FUE | FUE, some FUT and robotic FUE |
| Main destinations | Istanbul | Tijuana, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Cancún |
| Regulator | Ministry of Health | COFEPRIS |
| Travel from the US | 10 to 13 hour flight, about 3 days | Short drive or 2 to 5 hour flight |
| Follow-up | Online, usually for 12 months | Online or in person, varies by clinic |
How Much Does a Hair Transplant Cost in Turkey vs Mexico?
Turkey is usually the cheaper of the two, and the gap grows with the size of the operation. Most Mexican clinics charge $1.25 to $2.50 per graft, so a 3,000-graft operation typically costs $3,750 to $7,500 for the surgery. In Turkey, the same operation usually costs $2,700 to $4,000, and the price normally includes the hotel, VIP transfers, medication and aftercare.

| Number of grafts | Turkey, all-inclusive | Mexico, at $1.25 to $2.50 per graft |
|---|---|---|
| 2,000 grafts | $2,200 to $3,200 | $2,500 to $5,000 |
| 3,000 grafts | $2,700 to $4,000 | $3,750 to $7,500 |
| 4,000 grafts | $3,400 to $4,600 | $5,000 to $10,000 |
Per-graft pricing also changes how the plan is made. When every graft is billed, the price pushes patients toward fewer grafts. With a fixed package, the number of grafts becomes a purely medical decision. In the video below, I explain the difference between the two pricing models, starting at that part of the explanation.
What Does the Whole Trip Cost From the US?
Mexico is cheaper to reach, but the trip around the surgery is usually paid separately. Turkey costs more in airfare, but the hotel, transfers and most of what you need on the ground are already in the package.
| Cost item, 3,000 grafts | Turkey | Mexico |
|---|---|---|
| Operation | $2,700 to $4,000 | $3,750 to $7,500 |
| Hotel and transfers | Included | Usually extra |
| Medication and PRP | Included | Often extra |
| Travel from the US | Return flight from New York, $649 to $1,207 | Drive or short flight, usually lower |
| Typical total | $3,400 to $5,380 | Usually above $4,500 once extras are added |

Why Is a Hair Transplant Often Cheaper in Turkey Than in Mexico?
Turkey has become the world’s main centre for hair restoration, with a mature market of clinics that focus on nothing else. Strong competition between these clinics keeps prices low, and the weak lira lowers local costs further when converted into dollars. Authorised health tourism providers in Turkey also benefit from a VAT exemption for foreign patients, and the package model lets clinics bundle hotels and transfers at rates a patient could not book alone.
In Mexico, hair transplants are one part of a broader medical tourism market that also includes dentistry and cosmetic surgery. Clinics are more spread out across cities, and per-graft pricing remains the most common model, which makes large operations more expensive.
Is the Quality of Hair Transplants Better in Turkey or Mexico?
Good results are possible in both countries, and the surgeon matters more than the flag. The difference is depth. Turkey has a far larger number of clinics dedicated to hair restoration, a long track record with international patients and wide use of sapphire FUE, DHI, unshaven and Long FUE techniques. In Mexico, most clinics use standard FUE, some still perform FUT, and robotic FUE is available in a few large cities.
| Quality factor | Turkey | Mexico |
|---|---|---|
| Focus on hair restoration | Many clinics do nothing else | Often one service among others |
| Sapphire FUE and DHI | Widely available | Available at some clinics |
| Unshaven and Long FUE | Widely available | Limited |
| Large sessions, 3,000 to 4,500 grafts | Common | Less common, cost rises per graft |
| Independent accreditation | Available, for example TEMOS or JCI | Available at some clinics |
In both countries, ask who designs your hairline, who extracts the grafts and who opens the recipient channels. At Smile Hair Clinic, each doctor operates on no more than two patients a day, and the clinic is the only hair transplant clinic in Turkey and in the world with TEMOS A-Rating accreditation. In the video below, Jason Wolf, a nurse known for his videos about nursing, goes through his 2,200-graft operation and shares how it felt to be on the patient side for once.
How Are Hair Transplant Clinics Regulated in Turkey and Mexico?
In Turkey, clinics and doctors are licensed by the Ministry of Health, hair transplants must be performed in licensed health facilities, and clinics treating international patients need a separate health tourism authorisation certificate. In Mexico, health facilities are licensed by COFEPRIS, the federal health regulator, and doctors must hold a professional licence to practise.
| Turkey | Mexico | |
|---|---|---|
| Facility licensing | Ministry of Health | COFEPRIS |
| Doctor licensing | Ministry of Health | Professional licence |
| International patient authorisation | Required for health tourism providers | Not a separate requirement |
| How to check a clinic | Ask for the Ministry licence and the health tourism certificate | Ask for the COFEPRIS licence and the surgeon’s professional licence |
Unlicensed centres exist in both countries, and they are the main source of poor results. A guide to choosing a clinic is on the hair transplant in Turkey page.
How Does Travel Compare Between Turkey and Mexico?
This is Mexico’s biggest advantage. Tijuana is about 30 minutes from San Diego by car, and Mexico City, Guadalajara and Cancún are 2 to 5 hours by air from many US cities, mostly in the same or a nearby time zone. For patients who live near the border, Mexico can be done as a short trip.
Istanbul is a 10 to 13 hour non-stop flight from many US cities and 7 to 8 hours ahead of Eastern time. US citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. The stay takes about three days, with the operation on day two and the first wash on day three, and many patients add a day or two to rest after the flight. Most patients find that the longer flight is easily outweighed by the lower price, the all-inclusive package and the depth of experience in Istanbul.
Kelly and her husband Christopher combined travel with his hair transplant, and their video shows his consultation with me, the operation and the second day in Istanbul.
What Is Included in a Hair Transplant in Turkey vs Mexico?
Turkish clinics usually sell all-inclusive packages, while Mexican clinics more often quote the surgery alone, with hotel and transport arranged by the patient. Some border clinics include local transport, but the scope varies widely.
| Item | Turkey package | Typical Mexico quote |
|---|---|---|
| Consultation and hairline design | Included | Included |
| Blood tests | Included | Varies |
| Medication and PRP | Included | Often extra |
| Hotel | 2 to 3 nights included | Usually extra |
| Airport and clinic transfers | Included | Varies |
| Follow-up | Online, usually 12 months | Varies by clinic |
What each Smile Hair Clinic package includes is explained on the hair transplant Turkey package page.
How Does Follow-Up Work From Turkey and Mexico?
Being closer to home makes an in-person visit to a Mexican clinic easier if you ever need one. In practice, most follow-up after FUE is visual and happens online in both countries. At Smile Hair Clinic, every package includes a 1-year care plan, with photos sent at key stages and your doctor reviewing your progress, and your coordinator remains your contact in English. Practical aftercare advice is in the patient guide.
Is It Safe to Have a Hair Transplant in Turkey or Mexico?
Yes, in a licensed clinic where named doctors perform the critical steps, in either country. The medical risks of a hair transplant are low in experienced hands and the same wherever the operation takes place. Before you travel to either destination, check the US State Department’s travel advisory for the city you plan to visit, and choose a clinic that can show its licence and its doctors.
In the ABC News Nightline documentary below, an American patient travels to Istanbul for his operation with Dr. Gökay Bilgin, and the programme looks at whether going abroad for a hair transplant is safe and what he saw a year later.
Should You Choose Turkey or Mexico for Your Hair Transplant?
For most patients, Turkey is the stronger choice for a medium or large operation, while Mexico suits those for whom a long flight is the deciding factor. The table summarises when each destination fits best.
| Your situation | Better fit |
|---|---|
| You need 2,500 grafts or more | Turkey |
| You want a fixed, all-inclusive price | Turkey |
| You want sapphire FUE, DHI, unshaven or Long FUE | Turkey |
| You want an accredited, doctor-led clinic at a lower price | Turkey |
| You live near the border and want to drive | Mexico |
| You cannot take a long-haul flight | Mexico |
Smile Hair Clinic Packages for North American Patients
We work with three all-inclusive packages, Gold (€2,390, about $2,750), Platinum (€3,290, about $3,800) and Diamond (€5,790, about $6,650). Each covers the operation, blood tests, PRP, medication, hotel nights, VIP transfers, the first wash and the 1-year care plan, and the price does not change with the number of grafts. In Diamond, consultation, planning and the incisions are carried out by Dr. Gökay Bilgin, myself or our head doctor Dr. Firdavs Ahmedov.
For a 4,000-graft operation, even Platinum usually costs less than the surgery alone at a typical Mexican clinic. The full price picture is on the hair transplant Turkey cost page.
