body hair transplant

A body hair transplant (BHT) uses hair from the beard, chest or other parts of the body as an extra donor source when the back of the scalp cannot supply enough grafts on its own. The grafts are extracted with FUE and added to the scalp, usually to build density in the crown and behind the hairline. It is mainly used for advanced hair loss, a weak donor area or repair after a previous transplant. In Turkey, a body hair transplant typically costs $2,200 to $5,000, compared with $7,500 to $13,500 in the United Kingdom and $15,000 to $25,000 in the United States.

I am Dr. Mehmet Erdoğan, co-founder of Smile Hair Clinic in Istanbul and an associate member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS). Body hair is a valuable reserve, not a replacement for scalp hair. Used in the right place and the right proportion, it can turn a result that would have been too thin into one that looks full. This page explains which body areas can be used, who benefits, what to expect and what it costs.

Body hair transplant at a glance What to expect
Technique FUE extraction from body donor areas, combined with scalp grafts
Main donor areas Beard, especially under the chin, then chest
Best suited for Advanced hair loss, limited or overharvested scalp donor, repairs
Where body grafts go Mainly the crown and behind the hairline, not the front edge
Anesthesia Local anesthesia, you stay awake
Operation time About 6 to 8 hours, sometimes longer
Stay in Istanbul 3 to 4 days
Final result 12 to 18 months
Typical price in Turkey $2,200 to $5,000

What Is a Body Hair Transplant?

A body hair transplant is an FUE hair transplant that adds grafts taken from outside the scalp. In a standard operation, all grafts come from the back and sides of the head. When that area is too thin, too small or has already been used, hair follicles from the beard, chest or other body areas are extracted one by one and transplanted to the scalp alongside the scalp grafts.

Body hair behaves differently from scalp hair. It is often thicker or finer, grows in shorter cycles and reaches a shorter length, so it is not placed everywhere. In most plans, scalp grafts still form the hairline and the visible front, while body grafts add volume behind it.

Which Body Areas Can Be Used as Donors?

Not all body hair is equally useful. The choice depends on how thick, long and plentiful the hair is.

Donor area Hair characteristics How it is used
Beard, especially under the chin Thick, strong, grows well after transplantation The best body donor, used for crown and mid-scalp density
Chest Softer, often shorter Background density in the crown and between scalp grafts
Back, arms, legs Finer, shorter growth cycles Rarely used, only for subtle support when other sources are not enough

The beard is by far the most reliable body donor. Hair from under the chin and the neck can usually be taken without visibly changing the beard, because extraction is spread out and the remaining hair covers the area.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Body Hair Transplant?

A body hair transplant suits patients who need more grafts than their scalp donor area can safely give. Typical candidates have advanced hair loss, around Norwood Type 6 or Norwood Type 7, a naturally thin or small scalp donor area, a donor area overharvested by a previous transplant, or a failed result that needs repair. The best results are seen in men with a strong, dense beard or plenty of chest hair.

It is not the right choice when body hair is very sparse or very different in color and texture from scalp hair, or when the scalp donor alone can meet the goal. In that case, a standard sapphire FUE operation gives a more predictable result. If you would rather use your beard to fill your face than your scalp, the beard transplant page covers the opposite route.

How Is a Body Hair Transplant Performed?

A body hair transplant is done under local anesthesia and usually takes about six to eight hours, sometimes longer in complex cases. Planning comes first. We assess the scalp donor, the beard and the chest, and decide how many grafts each area can give and where each type of graft will go.

Scalp grafts are usually extracted first, followed by body grafts from the beard or chest. Body hair is often extracted with careful manual or slow micromotor technique, because the follicles sit at sharper angles and in thinner skin. You can read more on the manual FUE page. Scalp grafts are then placed at the hairline and body grafts are placed behind it and in the crown, so the front looks natural and the back gains volume.

Large restorations using body hair are sometimes split into two sessions. A good example is Ido, a Norwood Type 6 patient who received 7,750 grafts in two operations, with beard hair used as an extra donor source. His story is on the unshaven hair transplant page.

Marcell Fülöp, a natural bodybuilding world champion from Hungary, had his hair transplant with Dr. Gökay Bilgin. One day after the operation, he talks about the procedure, the team, hygiene and how the whole journey in Istanbul was organized.

What Results Can You Expect From a Body Hair Transplant?

Body hair can add real density, but expectations must stay realistic. Body grafts generally survive and grow less predictably than scalp grafts. Beard grafts perform best, while chest and limb hair usually give a more modest result. Body hair may also stay shorter than scalp hair, which is one reason it is placed where it adds bulk rather than at the hairline.

In very advanced hair loss, body hair improves coverage but cannot always recreate the density of a full head of hair. The goal is a result that looks natural and full at a normal viewing distance, and that is achievable for many patients who would otherwise have had too few grafts.

What Does Recovery Look Like After a Body Hair Transplant?

The scalp heals in the usual way after FUE, and the body donor areas heal quickly. Tiny marks under the chin or on the chest fade within a week or two, and the beard hides most of them as it grows back.

Time after surgery What you will notice
Days 1 to 7 Mild crusting on the scalp, small dots on the beard or chest donor areas
Weeks 3 to 5 Transplanted hairs shed while the follicles stay in place
Months 3 to 4 First new hairs appear
Months 6 to 9 Clear improvement in density
Months 12 to 18 Final result, body grafts can take a little longer to mature

Day-to-day aftercare instructions are collected in the patient guide.

How Much Does a Body Hair Transplant Cost?

A body hair transplant in Turkey typically costs between $2,200 and $5,000, with complex multi-donor cases reaching about $6,500. The same procedure usually costs $7,500 to $13,500 in the United Kingdom and $15,000 to $25,000 in the United States, and very large mixed-donor procedures there can exceed $30,000.

Country Typical body hair transplant price
Turkey $2,200 to $5,000, complex cases up to about $6,500
United Kingdom $7,500 to $13,500
United States $15,000 to $25,000

At Smile Hair Clinic, body hair is added to the hair transplant package as an extra donor source. Using beard hair costs about $170 (€150), and beard and chest hair together about $280 (€250), on top of the package price. The package options and who performs each one are explained on the hair transplant in Turkey and hair transplant turkey cost page.

What Are the Risks of a Body Hair Transplant?

A body hair transplant is safe when it is performed by an experienced doctor in a licensed, sterile facility. The usual effects are the same as in any FUE transplant, with temporary swelling, crusts, itching and numbness, plus small marks on the body donor areas that fade quickly.

The specific risks are overharvesting the beard, which can leave it visibly thin, and lower or uneven growth of body grafts. Careful planning keeps beard extraction spread out and limited. Before booking, ask how often your doctor uses body hair and to see results similar to yours. You can read about my background on the about me page.

Frequently Asked Questions About Body Hair Transplant

Can body hair really be transplanted to the head?

Yes. Beard and chest hair can grow on the scalp, although they keep some of their original character, such as thickness and length.

Which body hair works best?

Beard hair, especially from under the chin, gives the most reliable results. Chest hair is the second choice.

Will my beard look thinner afterwards?

Not if the extraction is planned carefully. Grafts are taken from under the chin and spread out, so the visible beard keeps its shape.

Does a body hair transplant look natural?

Yes, when body grafts are placed correctly. Scalp grafts form the hairline, and body grafts add density behind it where their texture blends in.

Is a body hair transplant painful?

Only the local anesthetic injections sting briefly. After that the scalp and the donor areas are numb for the rest of the operation.

How long should I stay in Istanbul?

Most patients stay three to four days, depending on the size of the operation.

Is a body hair transplant a good option for repairing a failed transplant?

Often, yes. When a previous operation has depleted the scalp donor, body hair can provide the extra grafts a repair needs.
